Yes. Bluetooth Low Energy is the transport. Two phones in range talk directly; further away, other byte-chat phones pass the message along. No Wi-Fi, no cell, no server anywhere in that path.
A single Bluetooth hop is roughly 30–100 metres depending on phones and walls. Range compounds with every relaying phone in between, so a dense crowd stretches much further than any one device could.
No. Private messages are encrypted end to end. A relaying phone sees an opaque blob it can't decrypt, and it can't tell what's inside or who ultimately wrote it.
Neither. You pick a display name on first launch. Your identity is a cryptographic key generated on the device — nothing is registered anywhere, and nothing is uploaded.
Bluetooth Low Energy is designed for exactly this and the impact is modest. Relaying for others costs more, so at big events it helps to keep the app open and the phone charged.
It's the app you're glad to have when WhatsApp can't send. Everyday reach still depends on who's nearby or who you've favorited — but in the moments that matter, it's the one that works.
